TIROUFLET Sainte Anne de Claix Soluble milk powder 1884: Léo - Lot 767
TIROUFLET Sainte Anne de Claix Soluble milk powder 1884: Léon LESCURE de COMBEMARY set up an industrial butter factory in his docaine de CLAIX (former residence of the bishops of Angoulême). He was truly the promoter and apostle of dairy production in CHARENTE. By 1890, L. LESCURE extra-fine butter was renowned enough to win a GOLD medal at the PARIS INTERNATIONAL EXPO. Slogan to be exploited: PREMIER BEURRE DE CHARENTE whose quality was recognized by an international award. 1887: F. MARCHAND, owner of ROULLET and "LES SIGOGNEAUX" in the commune of MOUTHIERS-SUR-BOEME, establishes a dairy with the participation of the owners. - They are neighbors and friends. The form of this association is cooperative. F. MARCHAND loaned the premises he owned and ran the business: manufacturing and marketing. Rammasage was handled by "brokers" for a fee of 0.02 centimes per liter. Like L. LESCURE butter, SIGOGNEAUX butter was offered as an extra-fine table butter. 1888: Les Sigogneaux butter won a silver medal at the Angoulêrne Agricultural Competition. This award was repeated in 1889, 1890 and 1891. 1898: Les Sigogneaux was listed as follows: - daily collection: 1,200 liters ; - daily butter production: 40 to 60 kilos, depending on the season. At first, the dairy sold directly to consumers by parcel post, then, as collection expanded, to local authorities and retailers. As soon as the Laiterie des Sigogneaux was created, there was competition, then an open battle with the Laiterie de CLAIX. - Les Sigogneaux paid the price. Marchand was no match for LESCURE. LESCURE had considerable resources, more complete equipment, truly qualified staff and more efficient sales methods. Brokers at both dairies receive the same remuneration (0.02 F. per liter), but CLAIX contributes to collection costs with a quantity bonus, and rewards "consistent quality" (milk that is clean, collected and delivered quickly, and therefore not exposed to "spoilage"). At a date yet to be determined, Adrien CHILLAUD becomes Léon LESCURE's sales agent, travels, creates a sales network that already covers the south of France, and gradually gains importance in CLAIX, where he manages the dairy before becoming its manager. The apparent (and real) rivalry between the two companies doesn't prevent the CLAIX Dairy's sales agent, who is also the owner, from delivering much of his milk to the Sigogneaux. He had excellent relations with P. MARCHAND, advising him and even facilitating the marketing of his butter. In this way, he seems to have been preparing the merger he wanted for a long time, working to convince MARCHAND that his too-small business was unprofitable. The first condition for the creation of the Laiterie Coopérative de CLAIX was the disappearance of the Laiterie en Participation des Sigogneaux, by absorption or merger. Preparing this operation took several years and numerous steps. By late summer 1908, LESCURE and CHILLAUD held all the cards: disappearance or merger. - The confrontation between the two companies left no doubt as to the outcome of a struggle which, at Les Sigogneaux, gave way to abandonment. On November 1, 1908, MARCHAND submitted. The articles of association examined on November 8 were definitively adopted, after a few modifications, on December 1, 1908: the date on which the LA LAITERIE COOPERATIVE DE SAINTE-ANNE-DE-CLAIX and surrounding regions went into operation. The communes in the collection area are those of the cantons of BLANZAC, ANGOULEME, HIERSAC, JARNAC, SEGONZAC, CHATEAUNEUF, BAIGNES, BROSSAC, CHALAIS, MONTMOREAU, BAEBEZIEU and VILLEBOIS-LAVALETTE. A director, MAHCHAIID later became vice-president, but always kept a low profile. On his death in 1921, he was replaced on the Board of Directors by his son-in-law Ernest GALOPAUD, who chaired the Board for ten years, and was succeeded by M. BOUILLON. After Léon LESCURE's death, his nephew Charles LESCURE became Chairman, but the real driving force behind the Cooperative was Adrien CHILLAUD / 4284/5000 1884: Installation by Léon LESCURE of COMBEMARY of an industrial creamery in his docaine de CLAIX (former residence of the bishops of Angoulême).
