GRÜN JULES ALEXANDRE - Lot 1021
GRÜN JULES ALEXANDRE
Carnaval de Nice 1911 Very large & beautiful oil signed Grûn on the right One of the Greatest Poster Artists
Jules-Alexandre Grün (May 25, 1868 - February 15, 1938) was a French post-impressionist painter, and above all a poster artist and illustrator.
Grûn's best-known painting is The Dinner, produced in 1911, when he was at the height of his artistic powers. It was, however, in the field of posters and illustrations that he was most recognized & famous. He was employed by one of Paris' major printing houses, and his artistic director was Jules Chéret. Chéret was also his main competitor in poster art.
This 1911 painting conveys a festive, convivial spirit, with the atmosphere created by these mischievous cherubs transporting us back to a time when nothing seemed impossible.
It really is a masterpiece by this major artist of the belle époque, one of the greatest poster artists of all time.
This oil on canvas must have been produced for a restaurant, a cabaret in Montmartre, or a theater near the Grands Boulevards in Paris, and was specially commissioned for an important location, measuring 260 x 280 cm, 102.37 x 110.24 inches /.
