Ansel Adams (One of the Greatest Photographers of All Time) Apple Think Different * Ansel Easton Adams (February 20, 1902, San Francisco - April 22, 1984, Monterey) was an American photographer and environmentalist, best known for his black-and-white photographs of the American West, particularly the Sierra Nevada and Yosemite National Park. One of his most famous photographs is Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico. In collaboration with Fred Archer, Adams developed the zone system, a process for determining the correct exposure and contrast adjustment on the final print. The resulting depth and clarity are the hallmarks of the photographs of Ansel Adams and those he taught the technique to. At first, Adams used large-format cameras (larger than 4 × 5 inches), which, despite their size, weight, set-up time and the price of film, were a good way of ensuring image sharpness, thanks to their high resolution. Adams founded the Groupe f/64 with photographer friends Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham, who in turn set up the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art. Ansel Adams' timeless, visually arresting photographs are still reproduced today on a wide variety of media: calendars, posters, books, making his images famous and recognizable.
