Igor MITORAJ (1944-2014)
Perseus. Bronze with green patina, signed lower right and numbered "A912/1000" on the back. Travertine base. H. 48 cm (with base). H. 38 cm (without base). Sculptor of Polish origin, Igor Mitoraj is inspired in his work by ancient statuary and pre-Columbian art. He exhibited in Paris at the Galerie La Hune in 1976. It is in Pietrasanta, near Carrara in Italy, that he began to develop a postmodern style, with a production of sculptures truncated or mutilated after the Antique. Perseus, in Greek mythology, is the son of Danae and Apollo, who conceived him in the form of a golden rain. Made famous by the killing of the Gorgon Medusa and the rescue of Andromeda from a sea monster, Perseus is an inspiring subject for sculptors. The works of Cellini and Canova may have inspired this torso to Igor Mitoraj. Perseus by Igor Mitoraj lends itself to all styles, appealing to both classical and modern collectors. The representation of the ideal beauty, voluntarily wounded, brings out the fragility of human nature, in which everyone can find themselves.
