CORNEILLE (1922-2010)
The ecstatic pose. Ink, watercolor and gouache on paper, signed with a stamp on the lower right. Mentions "Mela Lura" and "20-8-68" partially erased on the lower right. 20,6 x 29,8 cm. The ecstatic pose is characteristic of the post-CoBrA period, in which Cornelius returned to figurative art, where the representation of women is omnipresent. The eroticism of this drawing is underlined by the emphasis on female attributes, blending with a male body. All this in a mix of red, blue and white colors, enhanced by the black contours of the ink. The theme of ecstasy recurs several times in the work on paper of Cornelius, and we see the recurrence of this figure of a woman languid. According to the artist's language, the woman symbolizes the earth, and we can undoubtedly see a reference to her position as anchored to the ground in this drawing. The drawing we present is the perfect illustration of Cornelius' work in the 1960s, and the perfect illustration of the growing place of women in his production.
