Georges Lucien GUYOT (1885-1973)
Reclining Tigers. Charcoal on paper, signed lower left. 53 x 69.5 cm. Fading, slight yellowing of the paper. Georges Lucien Guyot is a French painter and animal sculptor who frequented the artistic effervescence of Montmartre during the Roaring Twenties as a guest at the Bateau-Lavoir along with artists such as Picasso, Apollinaire and Modigliani. In 1931 he joined the short-lived group of the Twelve founded by François Pompon, which brought together animal painters and sculptors such as Jouve, Poupelet and Chopard. Georges Guyot has the particularity of working on animal nature through different mediums, whether sculpture, painting or drawing, always with the same precision and accuracy in the translation of the animals' movements and expressions. Wild animals, and particularly the big cats, have become his favorite models, which he has been observing assiduously since he was a child in the Jardin des Plantes. The reclining tigers we present translate this acuity with which the artist captures and sublimates the power of the fawn whose musculature can be seen under its striped coat. Calm but ready to pounce, these majestic tigers will undoubtedly find a place of choice in their new adopted family.
