A major figure in abstract landscape painting, Chu Teh-Chun (1920-2014) has never ceased to subtly link Chinese and Western sensibilities. Chute translates with poetry and vitality the painter's dual culture as well as his talent for combining an acute attention to natural elements with their dreamlike significance. Flashback to China and a nod to Europe In 1988, the date of Chute, Chu Teh Chun's reputation, already well established in Europe, spread to Asia. In 1983, he returned to China, his native country, for the first time since he had moved to France nearly 30 years earlier. In 1987, his work was the subject of a major retrospective in Taipei. The circle is complete, and Chute perfectly symbolizes this completeness. A poetic homage to China, its fertile nature and its centuries-old artistic traditions, Chute is also influenced by the European avant-garde. The vivid colours, the sharp composition, the desire "to open up the light and summon its forms and rhythms" recall both Zao Wou-Ki and Nicolas de Staël, whom the artist has admired since the 1950s. A cosmic landscape radiating vitality A luminous projection splits a night of deep, vibrant, watery blues and greens. It is a waterfall. A waterfall, first of all, reminiscent of the craggy Chinese mountain landscapes that the painter criss-crosses and exalts with a new eye. A fall that is also adorned with an existential dimension, that of the loss of reference points, the disruption of the senses, the torments of the human psyche. From this "abstract landscape", typical of Chu Teh-Chun's work, emerge "visionary forms, appearing and dissolving forever before our eyes", as described by Oxford Michael Sullivan. Painted at a crucial moment in Chu Teh-Chun's history, Chute builds a powerful artistic bridge between Europe and China. Singular and radical, this painting is undoubtedly one of the artist's masterpieces.
