The beginnings of his career in the 1950s were marked by his research into abstraction before he turned away from it and settled on a figurative art form in which he found greater recognition. Cabot then developed a passion for etching and produced many figurative prints throughout his career. It was during this period that his institutional recognition began, notably when the prestigious MoMa in New York welcomed a still life engraved around 1964 into its collection. During his career, his works were exhibited in numerous museums and galleries, including the Denise René Gallery in 2004. His work on painted wood, such as the one presented here, is characteristic of his work in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Cabot's inventiveness and creativity led him to imagine these sculptures made up of an assembly of wooden panels painted in bold colours. These modern totems with their geometric lines are presented in a plexiglass box conceived by the artist as an integral part of his work as a way of discussing the place of the work in the viewer's space. This very colourful work, with its undeniably 1970s aesthetic, also has the advantage of being very accessible in format and of being the prototype of a series envisaged by the artist but which never saw the light of day. A unique work of museum quality.
