Alberto GIACOMETTI (1901-1966)
Alberto GIACOMETTI (1901-1966) Lamp stand "woman's head". Proof in bronze with brown patina. Stamp of the committee "AG 044". Height: 50 cm. Oxidation, small wear and scratches, crack on the base. A certificate of the Giacometti Committee will be given to the future buyer. Well-known for his iconic sculptures, Alberto Giacometti was also an outstanding decorator. This lamp base, known as the "Tête de femme", created around 1933-1934 for Jean-Michel Frank, is a prime example. Giacomettian finesse On an elegantly stylized foot rises a graceful woman's head. Accented by curved edges that outline the model's shoulders, the slenderness of the neck and features of the female face fully demonstrate the artist's ability to exalt the human form by elongating it. The result is a poetic balance of which only the Swiss sculptor has the secret, fine but not effete, light but not ethereal. Our lamp base thus contains all of Giacometti's genius, translated here into an object of interior decoration. Giacometti, sculptor and designer Alberto Giacometti's career as a decorator, triggered in particular by the visit of his brother Diego to Paris in 1927, was a success. In the 1930s, Jean-Michel Frank, the leading exponent of Art Deco furniture, commissioned several pieces from him, including this "Tête de femme" lamp base designed in his studio at 46 rue Hippolyte-Maindron. Proof of a sure taste, this prestigious order shows Frank's attraction for pure forms and archaeological objects. Combining Giacometti's singular style with Art Deco aesthetics, the "Tête de femme" lamp base is an exceptional object, both in its aesthetic qualities and its historical dimension.
