Théo TOBIASSE (1927-2012)
Theo TOBIASSE (1927-2012) An acrobat in Florence Oil on canvas Signed and dated (19)62 and titled upper left. Label of the Leandro gallery on the frame on the reverse. Dark green velvet frame. H. 81.5 ; W : 64.5 cm. Born into a family of Slavic origin, Theo Tobiasse spent part of his childhood in Israel, and eventually settled in Paris. The figurative painting of the inter-war period made a great impression on Tobiasse, who discovered the great figures of the Paris School, including Raoul Dufy. Escaping deportation, the painter devoted himself fully, after the Second World War, to his career as an artist. At the same time creator of a dreamlike universe, populated with animals, scenes of joy and circus, he also becomes a painter of Judaism and the duty of memory of the Shoah, through a more intimate and personal work. Halfway between darkness and gaiety, Théo Tobiasse is in line with the great figurative Judaic artists of the 20th century, such as Marc Chagall.
