Paul Sérusier, a founding member of the Nabis group and close to Gauguin, is one of the most highly regarded artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, both in Europe and across the Atlantic. From his beginnings at the Académie Julian to his stay in Pont-Aven, the painter became the figurehead of a new painting style alongside Maurice Denis, Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard. Fascinated by the Breton landscapes and culture, he settled in Chateauneuf-du-Faou in 1893. The work presented here is characteristic of this period. Preserving the contributions of Symbolist art by creating a stylised painting made up of coloured flat tints, we find typical plant motifs, including oak leaves, present in the paintings kept at the Musée d'Orsay and produced during the same period. A characteristic composition that invites meditation and contemplation.
