THAILAND, 18th - 19th century. Hunchbacked... - Lot 11 - Maison de ventes Good
THAILAND, 18th - 19th century. Hunchbacked sculpture of the monkey showing the swarm of bees. Golden bronze. H. 36 cm. Note: The monkey and elephant are often represented at the feet of the Buddha offering water for the elephant, honey for the monkey. This refers to the period when the Buddha withdrew into the forest and the two animals embody good and evil: the elephant offers water (the Good) and the Buddha's right hand is opened as a sign of acceptance of this offering. The monkey is the opposite because it seems to offer honey while it is a honeycomb (deception) and the Buddha's left hand is closed to refuse this "poisoned" gift.
