NAREN P. Champagne Deutz & Geldermann - Redfern - House Founded in 1838 William Deutz (1809–1884) and Pierre-Hubert Geldermann (1809–1884) came from families in Aachen, Germany, where they were born during the First French Empire. Attracted by the prosperity prevailing in France under King Louis-Philippe I, the two immigrants from Napoleonic Prussia settled in Champagne in 1830, where Deutz became a sales representative for the Bollinger champagne house in 1832 and Geldermann a wine merchant. In 1838, the two men opened a wine trading house. Through their export office in Germany, they sourced pre-bottled cuvées stored on racks, then purchased vineyards to produce their own wines. The Deutz & Geldermann House was led by successive generations of the Deutz and Geldermann families, who, by marrying into Champagne families that owned vineyards, expanded the business, which eventually became Deutz. Champagne Deutz was acquired in 1983 by Louis Roederer and repurchased in 1993 by the Rouzaud family, shareholders of the Roederer house. The Deutz house owns 3 km of cellars carved into the heart of the town’s chalk formations, more than 20 meters underground in the Aÿ hill.
