Jacques MAJORELLE (1886 - 1962)
Jacques MAJORELLE (1886 - 1962) Young woman on the Nile, 1912 Gouache on cardboard, signed, located "Egypt" and dated lower right. 59,5 cm x 48,5 cm A stain and a scratch, restorations. A certificate of the Marcilhac gallery will be given to the buyer. Jacques Majorelle is one of the main representatives of the French Orientalist movement. Afflicted by a lung disease that led him to seek a warm and dry climate, the son of the illustrious cabinetmaker of the Ecole de Nancy made numerous trips to Spain and Italy. In 1910 he discovered Egypt, which was his first encounter with the warm colours of the East, which would never leave him. From 1910 to 1917, he made four successive trips there, each time bringing back canvases in which the beginnings of his research on the East and exoticism were revealed, which would crystallize when he moved to Morocco in 1917. With its orientalist subject and soothing colors, this painting is the perfect example of Jacques Majorelle's work during the 1910s. The artist delivers here his idealized version of the simple life of Egyptian women under the hot climate of the Khamsin, which brings a cloud of sand with pastel shades over the landscape. Dust plays a major role in his paintings and envelops the subjects in a dreamlike atmosphere. The stylistic language that he established in Egypt led him to fame in the 1920s, placing him alongside the great names that shaped 20th century Orientalism, from Kandisky to Paul Klee.
