éMILE DECOEUR
Emile DECOEUR (1876 - 1953) Stoneware sculpture of two children leaning over a book, with cream and grey-green glaze glazed cream and grey-green. Signed "A. Descatoire" and "Decoeur céramiste" and monogrammed. Trace of a title inside H: 18 cm; W: 20 cm A chip and a small break on the ends of the book NOTES: A ceramist of the early 20th century, Emile Decoeur continued the research of his predecessors in the art of stoneware. A student of Lachenal and a fervent admirer of the work of Jean Carriès, Decoeur gave up earthenware for good in the 1910s to concentrate on the material effects of stoneware and flamed porcelain. With a scientific eye, he perfected many techniques. Considered as one of the great masters of "Art Deco" stoneware for his vases and other shaped pieces, we discover here a lesser known aspect of Decoeur's career. The artist collaborated with sculptors, who provided models to be made in stoneware, such as this astonishing sculpture with a finished glaze, proof of the technical virtuosity of the ceramist.
