GAILLARD EMM. Maurel Oil, Bordeaux Oil, Sure d'Elle, Peanut Oil The Maurels: A family of merchants in Bassens… a name well-known in the Bordeaux trade during the 19th century. Indeed, the Maurel, Maurel Frères, and Maurel et Prom companies, which owned major trading posts on the west coast of Africa, specialized in shipowning (commercial operation of vessels) and peanuts. Their numerous properties in Bassens. Although residing in Bordeaux, specifically in the new Quinconces district, this family acquired (or built) suburban residences in the Bordeaux region, notably four in Bassens. Marc, his brother Urbain (Maison Maurel Frères), Emile, and his brother Jean (Maison Maurel et Prom) settled in beautiful homes, all located in the southern part of the town: Séguinaud, Bonnefon, Lagarde, and Pomerol. Built on the hillside, they offered, from their vantage point, a breathtaking view of the Garonne… and the port! In the 19th century, Bassens truly emerged as a highly sought-after vacation destination with its beautiful mansions nestled among wealthy wine estates… The Maurels were deeply involved in local life in Bassens, as evidenced by their strong protests against the establishment of a chemical plant (Bertrand Fils et Cie) in the hamlet of Payault in 1911 / The Maurels: A family of merchants in Bassens... a major player in the Bordeaux trade during the nineteenth century.
